This article will guide you to install XAMPP so your PC will function as a web server (see previous article).
Download XAMPP at Apache Friends website. There are several options of XAMPP packages. Choose which comes with XAMPP installer. It is easy to install and uninstall.
Following is the installation steps:
- Double-click the XAMPP file (xampp-Win32-1.7.0-installer.exe, the XAMPP version 1.7.0).
- Next just click [OK] for choosing English languages.
- Setup Wizard window appear. Click [Next].
- You will be asked to choose a folder where XAMPP will be installed. Choose c:\ folder for installing the XAMPP, click [Next].
- In the next window that appear, click [Next]. It is confirming that you place shorcuts for running XAMPP on desktop and Start menu.
- Wait a few minutes while installing XAMPP.
- Click [Finish] after completing XAMPP installation.
- Then you can choose to run XAMPP Control Panel or next time. Click [Yes] if you will run it.
- Each time you manage your blog on a local PC, you have to run XAMPP first. Start XAMPP and you are on the XAMPP Control Panel.
- Click [Start] for each Apache and MySQL, so the Running signs appear. Right now your PC is becoming a local web server.
- Is your “web server” really running? To make sure, run your Internet browser and type http://localhost/. XAMPP logo will appear, please choose English by clicking [English] on menu below the logo.
- On window that appear, you can manage your local web server, including create a database needed by WordPress.
- Close your browser. To deactivate your local web server, back to XAMPP Control Panel, click [Stop] on Apache and MySql. Then close XAMPP Control Panel by clicking x on upper right-hand side of XAMPP window.
You have been configuring your PC as local web server. Please run your local web server any time by running XAMPP Control Panel. Please note, that this webserver is only for running and managing your WordPress local blog. It cannot be connected to the Internet.
